Father of barricaded subject speaks about son's health – WIFR

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The aftermath of a stand off on Friday results in the arrest of a Rockford man, but that man’s family says it’s his illness to blame.
The man from Friday’s incident hasn’t been identified, but his father, Deranz Brown says his son’s diagnosis tightens it’s grip, causing physical pain severe enough that he’s acting out in bizarre ways.
“My granddaughter’s calling me telling me ‘dad is going through something, help’,” said Brown, recalling that Friday his son was arrested. He said he wasn’t surprised to learn his son was suffering another mental health episode.
These incidents of psychosis are all too familiar Brown says, as his son battles pancreatitis.
“It was hard to bring him back you know, but he finally calmed down and he went downstairs,” said Brown. That’s when an hour long standoff ended with a peaceful surrender. Rockford Police took Brown’s son into custody, after locking himself in a home with a gun.
“It worked out very well, the family was very cooperative,” said Rockford Police Deputy Chief Robert Reffett.
But Brown worries about his son, now that he remains behind bars. He says this behavior is very unlike him, and that his son cares deeply for his family. In fact, Brown says he hasn’t been himself since he started his battle two years ago.
“Is he having another episode in there… you know that’s a chemical imbalance in his brain,” said Brown. “And the medicine, and his sickness is the cause.”
Mental health experts say they often see this happen, physical sickness triggering a negative shift in mental health. “Mental health symptoms will go away once the physical condition is addressed,” said KP Counseling’s Kevin Polky.
Brown’s son was scheduled for surgery Thursday to remove his gallbladder. They hoped it would be enough to ease his pain, and his episodes.
“We love our son and we just need him to get the proper help that he deserves,” said Brown. “He needs this surgery.”
Browns says his son’s bond is currently set at $2,000.
