Who is eligible for the scheme?
Eligible low-income individuals and families will receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through the Electronic Benefits Transfer card. This card functions like a debit card and can be used to acquire eligible food in authorised retail food stores.
To be eligible for this scheme, applicants must live in the state in which they apply and meet certain bank balance limits.
According to the government’s official website, a household with a person over 60 years old or disabled family member may have a higher bank balance limit.
New Yorkers who meet the criteria to be enrolled in the SNAP benefits scheme will be receiving the Food Stamp boost by June 17.
“Far too many households continue to grapple with food insecurity, and in many instances these struggles are a direct result of the economic toll inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Governor Kathy Hochul said.
“As we continue to build back our state’s economy better than it was before, these maximum food benefits will help put food on New Yorkers’ tables, while also providing local retailers and related businesses with a welcome infusion of capital.”
According to the New York governor’s website, 234 million dollars of federal funding will be infused into the New York State economy and households at the maximum benefit level, which is 835 dollars for a household of four.
“The maximum food benefits have played a critical role in helping New Yorkers avoid food insecurity throughout the pandemic, and that carries on today as our economy continues to mend,” the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance Commissioner Daniel W. Tietz said.
“These additional benefits are providing individuals and families across the state with the resources they need to put healthy, nutritious food on the table each month, as we collectively recover from the public health crisis.”
