Following a healthy lifestyle can be a very effective way of reducing your risk of serious illnesses and disease. In order to have the most optimal health, it is necessary to follow a few steps on a daily basis:
1. Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables
Your mom (and healthcare professionals) have told you to eat your vegetables, and they were right: eating fresh fruits and veggies everyday will provide your body with great nutrition and lower your changes for many illnesses and diseases.
2. Whole Grains Instead of Refined Grains
Focus your grain intake on whole grains, and cut out the refined grains. Whole grains are more nutritious, and they contain fiber to keep your digestive system healthy.
3. Limit Meat and Dairy Intake
Yes, I know that the Standard American Diet is very focused on eating meals full of meat and dairy ingredients. But, studies are showing that a high consumption of these items can be harmful to your health. Limit your meat and dairy intake, and focus your eating on whole, fresh foods instead. Beans and legumes are a great source of healthy protein without the high amounts of fat.
4. Choose Healthy Fat Sources
You can improve your health by switching out your unhealthy fats and oils for healthier versions. Focus your fat intake on natural oils such as extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin coconut oil. Or, get your fats from whole foods such as avocados, nuts or seeds.
Focusing your eating habits on these healthy foods is a great way to improve your health and prevent disease. But, remember that you must also cut out the unhealthy habits that you have: stop eating lots of sugar, cut back on your sodium intake, and avoid eating processed foods that are full of chemicals and preservatives.
